INTRODUCTION TO NATURAL FAMILY PLANNING (NFP)

A Typical Menstrual Cycle

"Timing is everything."

Many years ago scientists discovered that among the side effects of ovulation are a slightly higher body temperature and a drying up of cervical mucus. Natural family planning (NFP) makes use of these and other signs to determine when a woman is most likely to be infertile. It is a technique of fertility control based upon making love during only the naturally infertile or relatively infertile time of a woman's menstrual cycle.

A menstrual cycle has three phases. Phase one extends from the first day of menstruation to the beginning of the most fertile phase. It is relatively infertile. Next follows phase two the most fertile phase. Phase two includes the time up to ovulation and ovulation itself. After the unfertilized ovum disintegrates phase three begins. Phase three, which is absolutely infertile, ends with the first day of menstruation of the next cycle.

Before the Fertility Monitor was developed a woman who wanted to use the Sympto-Thermal Method had to learn many rules in order to interpret her fertile signs. But many women were too busy to attend the classroom instruction which was required. They also didn't have time to study the reading material. On top of this women in some parts of the country couldn't learn the method in a classroom setting because of a shortage of trained teachers.

The Fertility Monitor solved these problems. Now it is possible for women who have access to computers to use the Sympto-Thermal Method without spending twenty or thirty hours to learn the various rules and practice with textbook charts. This means you no longer have to go to school to learn it. Instead of trying to figure out the safe times of your menstrual cycle by charting your fertile signs with pencil and paper, you type the information into your computer and let the Fertility Monitor do the work.
